The festival of Sankranti arrives with all
its beauty and splendour. This day is no ordinary day. It marks the beginning
of the sacred Uttarayana (northward journey of the Sun). It confers on us
plenty, and prosperity and helps us develop virtues and undertake sacred
activities. You can conquer the entire world when your thoughts are noble. When
you fill your heart with worldly thoughts and feelings, you will not be able to
practice your innate divine qualities. Hiranyaksha, Hiranyakasipu, Duryodhana
and Kamsa were by no means ordinary. Though they were very strong in their body
and mind, they became weak as they were immersed in worldly feelings. Do not
fill your heart with worldly feelings. Every individual is endowed with mighty
power and intelligence. Develop virtues, noble thoughts, and sterling character
and you will accomplish great heights
So this festival gives us the feeling to make
our thought & action Godward.
Now let’s discuss its importance on
our health.
Vitamin D is made by the body with
sunlight. Sesame seeds( til) have the highest calcium (975mg per 100g). Milk
has 125mg only.
The body is capable of storing vitamin D for up to a year and using the reserves. Lastly, the body is capable of getting its
vitamin D reserves full with 3 full days of sunlight. The best quality of
sunlight is available at end of winter & beginning of summer.
In the astrological sense, our soul moves from the Sagittarius trine (mool trikon) sign of Jupiter to Capricon the ordinary sign of Saturn where Mars exalts. By cutting it short we can say that sun takes knowledge and intellect from the moon and enters into the house of Karma with full energy. So that he may enjoy the fruit in the future. Therefore let all of us do our karma with full enthusiasm.
Now join the dots, and see how wise our
sages were of ancient India. They created a festival of flying kites where our kids get excited to go in the open, under direct sunlight, throughout the
day starting in the early morning. And their mothers feed them homemade TIL
laddoos. Are we not a fantastic culture.
This is a day of dedication!
Become whole, by wholesome deeds and thoughts; that is the message of the holy
day... Have self-confidence; for, that self is Divine; it has in it all the
strength.
